Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, more than half of the country's entire population was forced to leave their homes and flee to survive. Currently, about one million people who left Syria and Iraq need assistance during the coming winter months.
Approximately 800,000 people, many of whom fled their homes in terror and taking only the clothes on, now need shelter. And more than 1.7 million Syrian refugees could go hungry due to a crisis of financial resources.
The financial crisis may lead to suspension of food aid, which will have a devastating impact on millions of Syrian families who are doing everything to survive in extremely difficult conditions. Many are living in makeshift shelters and damaged or unfinished buildings, no clothes to survive the long, harsh winter.
The UNHCR is doing to help
UNHCR is working 24 hours a
day with other agencies and humanitarian aid groups to provide the necessary assistance as the harsh winter approaches. We distribute stoves and fuel for heating, insulation for tents, thermal blankets and winter clothes.
Thanks to the generous contributions of our donors, last year alone, 1.7 million refugees received food aid, 350,000 children were enrolled in school and more than 400 000 refugees received shelter in camps.
